SPOTLIGHT ON OPPORTUNITY

The vision of Grace4Kenya includes the transformation of impoverished communities into prosperous followers of Christ who can break out of the cycle of generational poverty. The Opportunity branch of Grace4Kenya strives to introduce ways for subsistence farmers to generate income and support their families.
The Community Health Evangelism (CHE) program has been the heartbeat of the Opportunity branch of Grace4Kenya, helping to turn vision into action. CHE equips communities to recognize their own challenges and use local resources to create lasting, positive change. Through practical training and mentorship, families gain tools to improve their quality of life, strengthen financial stability, and build new streams of income.
Currently, six CHE staff members are training and mentoring pastors and village leaders to help them launch programs that combine evangelism, education, and community development. The latest training class pictured below brought together over 20 pastors and church leaders, all eager to take what they have learned back to their congregations and begin their first projects.
CHE training starts with the basics—health and hygiene—and then expands to nutrition and agriculture. Trainers teach families how to plant kitchen gardens and grow banana, mango, and avocado trees alongside vegetables that complement their staple crops of maize, kale, millet, and red beans. With these new skills, families not only eat better but can sell their extra produce for income. CHE leaders go on to teach table banking, poultry keeping, and raising chrysanthemums for pyrethrum.
Table banking—is a simple but powerful model where small groups pool their savings so members can take turns investing in small ventures, such as buying their first flock of chicks. Over time, the families build chicken coops and earn income by selling eggs and chickens.
When an outbreak of bird flu wiped out most chickens in the first year, CHE leaders did not give up—they responded. The following year, they organized a vaccination campaign across all participating villages, ensuring healthier, more resilient flocks. Here you see a CHE leader using eye drops to vaccinate a chicken.
Recently, CHE introduced a brand-new opportunity by partnering with Kentegra, a Kenyan biotech company, that produces an organic pesticide derived from chrysanthemums.
Kentegra staff have been training members of the Lelan area church on how to plant, grow, harvest, and dry the flowers for processing. To the right you can see church women planting seeds for their very first crop—by hand, just as all farming in the area is done.
Grace4Kenya continues to look for new partners who can equip and mentor local people with practical, income-generating skills.
